The natural ingredients in Protandim® were specifically chosen based upon their ability to cause the body to produce and up-regulate its natural network of antioxidant enzymes, including SOD and CAT. Protandim® has been formulated using high quality, potent herbal extracts processed under proprietary technologies. It therefore provides powerful antioxidant protection against oxidative stress.

Each of the 5 botanicals contained in Protandim® offer health benefits by themselves. But something amazing happens when they are combined in Protandim's propriety formulation. Protandim® The Nrf2 SynergizerTM,  achieves the goal, long sought after by world class medical researchers, of activating Nrf2. Nrf2 is a potent protein messenger contained in every cell of the body that sends information to the cell’s DNA telling the cells of the body to produce antioxidant enzymes to protect themselves from the ravages free radical damage known as oxidative stress. Nrf2 signals the genes in the nucleus of the cell to increase production of many antioxidant proteins or enzymes. Protandim®’s patented synergy of five herbs activates the Nrf2 transcription factor, which in turn acts as a molecular switch that regulates 3000 of the body’s most important genes (often referred to as survival genes); up-regulating protective genes while simultaneously down-regulating metabolic processes that are harmful to health.

Through the Nrf2 pathway Protandim® up-regulates three categories of health-promoting survival genes:

antioxidant enzymes  protect DNA and important cellular components against free radical damage
anti-inflammatory genes   protect tissues and organs against destructive inflammatory processes
anti-fibrotic genes   protect tissues and organs from abnormal fibrotic buildup;

Human clinical studies show that Protandim® increases levels of anti-aging catalytic enzymes:
Superoxide Dismutase (SOD) by 30%
Catalase by 54%
Glutathione by 300%
As a result, oxidative stress (free-radical damage) is reduced an average of 40-70% in just 30 days.

Protandim® is 100% Vegetarian - Free of Gluten, Wheat, Dairy, Gelatin and Yeast.

Withania somnifera)

Ashwagandha, one of the most vital herbs in Ayurvedic healing, has been used since ancient times for a wide variety of conditions, but is most well known for its restorative benefits. In Sanskrit ashwagandha means “the smell of a horse,” indicating that the herb imparts the vigor and strength of a stallion, and it has traditionally been prescribed to help people strengthen their immune system after an illness. In fact, it’s frequently referred to as “Indian ginseng” because of its rejuvenating properties (although botanically, ginseng and ashwagandha are unrelated). In addition, ashwagandha is also used to enhance sexual potency for both men and women.

Belonging to the same family as the tomato, ashwagandha (or Withania somnifera in Latin) is a plump shrub with oval leaves and yellow flowers. It bears red fruit about the size of a raisin. The herb is native to the dry regions of India, northern Africa, and the Middle East, but today is also grown in more mild climates, including in the United States.

Scientific Research

Ashwagandha contains many useful medicinal chemicals, including withanolides, (steroidal lactones), alkaloids, choline, fatty acids, amino acids, and a variety of sugars. While the leaves and fruit have valuable therapeutic properties, the root of the ashwagandha plant is the part most commonly used in Western herbal remedies.

(Bacopa monnieri)

Bacopa species are found in tropical and subtropical regions of the world, particularly the Americas. A few are regarded as weeds and excess stock should not be dumped in warmer regions. Most grow in moist amphibious conditions, though some like B. myriophylloides seem to be wholly aquatic.

Bacopa extract is taken from the succulent leaves of a small creeping plant commonly found growing throughout damp and marshy wetlands of India. This herb, with its small white flowers, is often mistaken for a water lily, although the two are unrelated. Bacopa (Bacopa monniera or B. monnieri) is also known as brahmi and water hyssop. The name of brahmi is thought to be derived from the Hindu’s creator of the universe, Brahma. The extract possesses medicinal qualities and is used to treat numerous mental and physical conditions.

The herb is most often used as a brain tonic, especially within its native origin of India. Bacopa extract has been used for centuries to restore and nourish the central nervous system. Properties found in the extract are known to increase mental functions within the brain. Bacopa contains antioxidants that are thought to protect brain cells, making them stronger and healthier. In fact, the extract is commonly used to enhance memory and concentration, thus improving learning comprehension and processing skills.

These antioxidants can also reduce the effects of stress on the brain. As a result, bacopa extract can be used to calm the nerves. It works especially well for alleviating symptoms associated with nervous exhaustion and anxiety. The herb also increases serotonin levels, which promote relaxation. This can help alleviate problematic headaches.

(Camellia sinensis)

Green tea is made from unfermented leaves and reportedly contains the highest concentration of powerful antioxidants called polyphenols. Antioxidants are substances that scavenge free radicals -- damaging compounds in the body that alter cells, tamper with DNA (genetic material), and even cause cell death. Free radicals occur naturally in the body, but environmental toxins (including ultraviolet rays from the sun, radiation, cigarette smoke, and air pollution) also give rise to these damaging particles. Many scientists believe that free radicals contribute to the aging process. Antioxidants such as polyphenols in green tea can neutralize free radicals and may reduce or even help prevent some of the damage they cause.

Green tea has been consumed throughout the ages in India, China, Japan, and Thailand. In traditional Chinese and Indian medicine, practitioners used green tea as a stimulant, diuretic (to promote the excretion of urine), astringent (to control bleeding and help heal wounds), and to improve heart health. Other traditional uses of green tea include treating flatulence (gas), regulating body temperature and blood sugar, promoting digestion, and improving mental processes.

Green tea has been extensively studied in people, animals, and laboratory experiments. Results from these studies suggest that green tea may be useful for the following health conditions:

Weight loss

Clinical studies suggest that green tea extract may boost metabolism and help burn fat. One study confirmed that the combination of green tea and caffeine improved weight loss and maintenance in overweight and moderately obese individuals. Some researchers speculate that substances in green tea known as polyphenols, specifically the catechins, are responsible for the herb's fat-burning effect.

Other uses

Drinking green tea has been found effective in a small clinical study for dental caries, or tooth decay. More studies need to be performed. Green tea may also be useful in inflammatory diseases.

The active ingredient in turmeric is curcumin. Turmeric has been used for over 2500 years in India, where it was most likely first used as a dye.

The medicinal properties of this spice have been slowly revealing themselves over the centuries. Long known for its anti-inflammatory properties, recent research has revealed that turmeric is a natural wonder, proving beneficial in the treatment of many different health conditions.
